Painting Warmup

I've decided to start doing these small acrylic paintings to get back into the painting groove.  I just start blobbing things about and eventually it starts looking like something and then I go get some reference.

I might sell some of these at Art Walk this year.

Pumpkin Kitten

I've been working on some RPG Monster Manual style illos and had to take a break from the horrible undead.  So here is eye-searing pumpkin kitten!

Pumpkin Cat

I've done a couple greeting card designs with these odd little cartoon cats.

I dunno.  Half the time I feel unproductive, and the other half of the time I'm working on things I can't show off here.

Cat Chef

Finished the cat chef sketch!

Journal - Catnap

This is the cat of my husband's former boss.  We were at his house for a board game party.  A good time was had by all, even if someone pulled over a cabinet downstairs and I lost big-time at Hansa Teutonica.

Jonas

The finished painting of Jonas.

We got to meet Jonas this weekend. He is a very handsome cat, if a bit shy. Acrylics on hardboard, 10x15".

Jonas - WIP 2

After several more hours of work, I'm almost done. I found some better lighting reference, fixed up the skew in the face and ears and made the eyes a good deal less creepy. I glazed the background with phthalo blue for some richer colour.

At this point I took a photo of the painting so that I could mess around digitally and see what could be improved. I ended up making the shadow more diagonal, darkening the light chair a bit, moving the feet down a bit, adding a bit more highlight to the tail and fixing his left ear. Unfortunately I forgot to photograph the final painting before it got picked up. I'm going to see if I can grab a photo of it when I visit family in southern Alberta later in the month.

Jonas - WIP 1

This is the stage of the painting process that doesn't look very good.  I've laid in the basic shading and started on the eyes.

Jonas Sketch

A preliminary sketch for a painting commission.

Fireflies

Space kittens with a giant mushroom and fireflies.  Just what you've always wanted!

Sketch Weekend

Here's a sketch from Saturday's sketch crawl. I went to West Edmonton Mall, one of the biggest malls in the world. I hadn't really planned on any specific destination (next time I plan to catch a random bus somewhere and see what there is to see on the bus route). My brother was visiting, and I asked him what his plans were for the day. He had planned to go shopping, so I came along for the ride.

West Ed is not a bad place to sketch. No one bothered me. There are so many people that it's easy to sit somewhere and sketch people without them noticing you. And there are some interesting things inside.

Anyway. Here's something from Sunday, since I was still in a sketching mood. My aunt-in-law's cat:

Pencil Sketches

A couple of sketches I did at a party a few weeks ago. Our host collects antique gramophones, and the house was filled with them.

I also sketched the family cat.

It was a board-game party, but I had an upset stomach, so I just vegetated on the sofa and drew all evening.
