Badlands

Desert scenery. From a photo I took while I was in the Badlands for a painting workshop last year. I think this is the area surrounding the Royal Tyrell Museum near Drumheller.

(If you're at all interested in dinosaurs, btw, and are ever in the area, the Royal Tyrell is totally worth checking out. Convince your parents/friends. Take your kids. Do it.)

Pen & ink, 4.5x6.5".

Illustration Friday - Faded

Emmy-Lou hated having to wear faded hand-me-downs, none of which fit properly.

Johnston Canyon Waterfall

Crow quill & brush. 4.5 x 6.5".

From Johnston Canyon near Banff.  I miss the mountains.  But we have this year's vacation booked and it's gonna be in Waterton (which I've never seen before) so I just have to hold on until then.

Pen & ink, 4.5 x 6.5".  Got out the quills again to do a few pieces for Artwalk.

Horse Drawing 8

Last sketch!  It was an interesting experience.  Apparently this is the second session in a set of animal-drawing workshops the comic shop is planning.  The first one was a dog, which I missed.  (I wasn't heartbroken -- there's dogs everywhere.  Horses, not so much.)  Next month they're planning to bring in a cow.  I've also put in a request for llamas and goats.  There's all sorts of interesting creatures out on farms and in parks surrounding Edmonton.

Horse Drawing 7

One of the girls sitting on the back.  This time I turned the sketchbook around the right way.

I wandered around the loading dock area to get some different angles.

This head turned out a bit better.

Saddle

A Western saddle, sitting on the ground.  I don't think I did the best job indicating the form.

Horses are kinda funny head-on.

Not the world's best placement on the page.

Horse Drawing 1

I did actually make it out to horse drawing. It was fun!

It was difficult to get Marty (the horse) to stay in one position for long enough, but he was quite mellow and returned to various poses for long enough for me to get some sketching done. The biggest problem was all the people who weren't drawing, who felt a need to entertain themselves and distract Marty pretty much the WHOLE TIME. So irritating.

Life Drawing 42

And that's it for this week.

Next week: something different. My local comic shop is bringing in a horse for a life drawing session and I'm hoping to attend. Techically I can ride down to the equestrian centre anytime and draw whatever's in the paddock, but hey, you don't often get to see a horse in a comic shop.

Life Drawing 36

This week's set of figure drawings.

This session wasn't nearly as good as the last one, alas. Brand new newsprint pad, though! Great to draw on, but still crappy to photograph.

Everybody else was doing it, so I did one too:

Figure Study

I went to the long pose class today. It was an interesting experience.

I'm pretty pleased, this isn't the worst painting I've ever done. The most frustrating thing was that I spent the first 30 minutes making mistakes, and spent the next 2.5 hours trying to correct them.

The second most frustrating thing was that the background looked better half-finished.

I think I'm going to try to get this one into the art show in early July.

Acrylic on masonite, about 12x16, I think. 3 hours.

Memory

Just wanted to sketch a big beefy warrior woman. But since I was listening to "Brothers in Arms" it wasn't going to be cheerful slaughter.

Caricature

I was trying to watch some music videos on Youtube and it kept playing commercials. When I saw this woman's face I knew I had to pause and do a caricature.  She has a face that lends itself wonderfully to silliness.

She's apparently the production designer for Game of Thrones.  Fabulous!
